China is an import-oriented country. The Chinese vegetable oil market majorly encompasses palm oil, soybean, rapeseed, peanut, sunflower oil, and olive oil. Over the past five years, soybean and palm oil had the largest shares in the Chinese vegetable oil market. Wilmar International Ltd (Yihai Kerry), Cofco Corporation, and Xiwang Food are some of the major edible vegetable oil companies operating in the Chinese market. One bushel of soybeans produces 11 pounds of soybean oil and approximately 48 pounds of soybean meal. The oil itself has a light-yellow color and a mild taste. First, since soy oil typically trades at more than 2x the price of soy meal, much of the value of the soybean is as an oilseed rather than as a source of protein. When China grows more quickly, it tends to send the price of energy and industrial metals higher and often creates a boom in emerging markets that export raw materials to China. I’m a little more bearish on production and carryout than the average, but not really by enough to make much of a difference. The market doesn’t expect much from beans, keeping its attention on corn. This, along with the difficulty of estimating early soybean yields makes the market ripe for a surprise.
